“I have my grandfather’s hard helmet that he was wearing during the time of his last duty. I also have his dress hat. I never met him, but it is such an honor to call him Grandpa.”

“Though listed as having passed by smoke inhalation, my grandfather’s legacy was told throughout my childhood. The Grandfather I never met ran back into an engaged fire to locate the a woman’s pet. She had a shelf over her stove with a container of flour there. The stove was on fire, and the shelf failed not far from where he was. The flour exploded. This is what we knew to be the reason he passed, so likely, it was inhalation, but flour particulate and the explosion was passed down as how it happened. None of us ever store flour near the stove. My father was the bearer of his name: William Raymond Benedict.”
